| There have been many editions of Trilby published over the years; in fact the book is still in print today. Interesting editions include a large format limited edition of only 250 copies, published in 1895 and signed by George du Maurier, and a 1931 edition published by J.M. Dent & Sons, which included an introduction by Gerald du Maurier. When Trilby was first serialised the novel included a minor character called Joe Sibley, who was based on the artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, a long-time friend of George du Maurier. Joe Sibley joined the storyline in part three of the novel and there was an illustration which made the connection to Whistler very clear. Whistler took offence and threatened to sue George du Maurier. The case did not actually get to court but the character was changed in the novel and so all editions in book form include the new character. There is in existence a bound edition of the monthly magazine instalments and that does, of course, include Joe Sibley and the offending illustration. In 1982 a book called Svengali was published by W.H. Allen, London. This book is in fact the original version of Trilby and so includes the Joe Sibley character. | ||
