Cornwall's Literary Heritage is a superb volume looking at literature in Cornwall and discussing the authors and poets that have either lived in Cornwall or visited and been inspired to write, from the earlier times to the present day. There have been books on the literary heritage of Cornwall in the past. But, there has been nothing new for a very long time and certainly nothing that compares to this fantastic volume, which contains a tremendous amount of facts and information between its covers.
The book is divided into eight chapters, starting by talking about Kernewek, the Celtic language spoken in Kernow (Cornwall) and its land of legends. It then goes on to discuss the regions of Cornwall and the literature that has come from the different areas, starting beautifully with Fowey and our much-loved Daphne du Maurier. In that section, Fowey to Falmouth, Mark also talks about a dozen more writers, including Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, A.L. Rowse and E.V. Thompson. And so the book continues bringing us a mass of information about an incredible number of writers as, chapter by chapter, it makes his way through Cornwall. Having taken a journey through history and around Cornwall, Mark's final chapter looks at some of our current authors. Writers such as Raynor Wynn, Liz Fenwick and Patrick Gale continue to bring us the magic of Cornwall through their writing today.
This book is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in Cornwall and the literature it has inspired.
