Margherita Orsi is an Adjunct Professor and Research Fellow at the Department of Interpreting and Translation at the University of Bologna in Italy.

She has studied the work of Daphne du Maurier extensively.  Last year she wrote the paper The Shaping of a Writer: Gollancz’s epitextual construction of Daphne du Maurier’s persona, which was published in Bridge: Trends and Traditions in Translation and Interpreting Studies, a double-blind peer-reviewed, open access, international online journal, published bi-annually by the Department of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia.  The paper was published on 29th November 2024.

Margherita wrote her paper following an academic visit to the Modern Records Centre of the University of Warwick, where she studied the papers of Sir Victor Gollancz, focusing particularly on the correspondence between Victor and Daphne du Maurier.  The article explores the editorial strategies employed by Gollancz to craft du Maurier’s public image as an author and argues that Gollancz created an actual myth of du Maurier’s life and persona, thus guiding the British public towards a pre-determined approach to her works, which contributed to how the author came to be perceived.
We are absolutely delighted to have gained permission from Margherita and Bridge: Trends and Traditions in Translation and Interpreting Studies so that we can share this excellent article with you.  We also thank the Daphne du Maurier Society of North America for the part they played in making this possible.
