A day-by-day look at the events taking place at Fowey Festival – Monday 13th May
On this day in 1907, Daphne du Maurier was born. To celebrate her birthday, there will be several du Maurier-related events taking place today.
Ella Westland
The morning begins with the first reading group of the week, taking place in Fowey Parish Hall at 9am. This morning, Ella Westland will discuss two of Daphne's short stories with you, Don't Look Now and Not After Midnight.
Helen Hanson
At 11am in Fowey Town Hall, Helen Hanson presents 'Do Look Now: Viewpoints on the Adaptable Daphne du Maurier. Taking the short story Don't Look Now and its 1973 film as a case study, Helen will explore how and why Daphne's writing is so adaptable beyond the page to visual storytelling in film and TV.
This afternoon, the first Daphne du Maurier's Fowey Guided Walks will take place. This is an opportunity to learn about Daphne, her life, her novels and Fowey. The walk starts at 2pm, at the Main Car Park, Hanson Drive, Fowey.
Annie Price
At 2pm in Fowey Town Hall, Annie Price will present her talk called 'The past is still close to us': An exploration of the Daphne du Maurier archives at the University of Exeter Special Collections. Annie is an archivist at the University of Exeter's Special Collections. She will present an illustrative talk, introducing us to the archives and discussing the fascinating insight they can provide into Daphne's writing process, daily life and love for Cornwall.
Other great events taking place today include Caroline Quentin's talk, Drawn to the Garden; David Gibbins's talk, A History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks; Alan Johnson talking about his new book, Death on the Thames and the Festival Jazz Evening at 8pm in Fowey Parish Church.
This year, we are delighted to say that the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature has a physical programme again, something that has been missing for the last couple of years and is now back by popular request.
