A day-by-day look at the events taking place at Fowey Festival – Friday 17th May

This morning begins with the second of Serena Trowbridge's two reading groups.  Today's book is the historical novel The King's General, Daphne du Maurier's book set during the English Civil War in the West.  This event takes place at 9am in Fowey Parish Hall.

Throughout the day, there is an excellent range of events beginning at 11am in Fowey Town Hall with David Parker and his film, For Those in Peril, which celebrates 200 years of the RNLI.  Then, ARKangel returns with a lunchtime recital based on Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee.

The afternoon begins with Susan Smilie talking about her non-fiction book The Half Bird, which takes you on her incredible journey from Land's End to the islands of Greece.  Later, John Le Carré's biographer, Adam Sisman, presents a talk about his new book, The Secret Life of John Le Carré

The early evening event is a panel discussion led by Iain Dale.  Iain has recently compiled and edited his new book Kings and Queens: 1200 Years of British and English Monarchs.  This evening, Sir Vernon Bogdanor, Gareth Streeter and Nigel Fletcher, all of whom have contributed essays to the book, will discuss the role of the monarchy in 21st-century Britain plus three of the monarchs featured in the book.

John O'Farrell's book

To end today's events, best-selling author and screenwriter John O'Farrell will talk about his new book Family Politics.  This book is full of heartwarming wit and razor-sharp political satire, and we are confident John's talk will be both fascinating and entertaining.

This year, we are delighted to say that the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature has a physical programme again, something that has been missing for the last couple of years and is now back by popular request.  You will be able to pick up a copy of the programme at The Royal Fowey Yacht Club, Fowey Parish Church, Fowey Town Hall, and some of the shops in the town.  You can also see the brochure and download it at the Fowey Festival website home page (scroll down the page to - Download the 2024 programme)https://www.foweyfestival.com
