Daphne du Meltier Cornwall Council's gritting lorry for the Fowey area
Two of Cornwall Council's gritting lorries Mevagritty and RNAS Cold Nose
With the fun and excitement of Christmas and the New Year behind us, lots of people poorly with winter bugs, and the weather being pretty grim in many places across the UK, and further afield, we think what you need is a little story to make you smile.
Cornwall Council's gritting map, January 2025
The gritting lorries are out and about in Cornwall, making the roads safe for those of you who must travel, but Cornwall Council's gritters are not just ordinary gritters; they have all been specially named after the areas that they cover. Examples include Humphreeze Davy, RNAS Cold Nose, Sallty McSaltash and Mevagritty.

Our favourite is, of course, Daphne du Meltier.
Imagine our much-loved author having a gritting lorry named for her!
If you are in Cornwall and see any of our big yellow gritting lorries, see if you can spot their names.
