Winner in the Honi Soit Writing Competition 2019 writes about Daphne du Maurier
Ella McKelvie was awarded first place in the non-fiction section of the Honi Soit Writing Competition 2019 with her essay Queerness and Daphne du Maurier. The competition was judged by New York Times journalist Isabella Kwai.
In this interesting essay, Ella tells us that she fell in love with Daphne du Maurier when she was eleven, after reading a copy of Rebecca loaned to her by her Mother. She then goes on to discuss Daphne du Maurier’s life, her work, her sexuality, how these things are interpreted by others and indeed, how that has affected Ella’s own view of Daphne at different times in her life.
