OCR Exam Board Boosts Diversity in English Literature Texts
Exam board OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA) has increased the diversity of its A-Level and GCSE English Literature syllabus, with a number of new titles, including novels, poetry and a play. These new texts will form part of the curriculum for English Literature students from September 2022. The move follows criticism that the curriculum in England is not sufficiently inclusive and needs to adapt to reflect modern society better.
OCR made its final selection after teachers voted on which books should be added to the curriculum, from lists drawn up by a panel of experts to showcase more women and black and minority ethnic writers. The new novels are all being added to the A-Level syllabus. They are Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo (2019), the first black woman to win the Booker Prize, Passing by Nella Larsen (1929), The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (1993), Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (1938), and The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon (2014).
We are delighted to see Daphne du Maurier included in this list, confirming that her work is as relevant today as ever.
