Music inspired by Daphne du Maurier and her work
Michael Modjeska
This week we heard from musician Michael Modjeska. He loves the writing of Daphne du Maurier, and it has inspired him to write and record a piece of music in homage to Daphne’s novel, Rebecca. It is called Mrs Danvers, and you can click here to listen to it.
On several occasions, the Daphne du Maurier website has heard from musicians who have found inspiration in the writing of Daphne du Maurier, particularly her most famous novel, Rebecca. So this seems a perfect moment to reflect on some of the other musicians we have told you about.
In November 2020, we introduced you to Jonathan Stich, a composer and musician living in Switzerland, also a massive admirer of Daphne du Maurier and her writing. Inspired by Rebecca, he wrote a superb composition for violin and piano entitled The Manderley Suite. Please click here to read more and for a link so you can listen to Manderley from The Manderley Suite.
In February 2021, Daphne du Maurier’s grandson, Ned Browning, shared a beautiful piece of music with us. He had been inspired to compose Rebecca Theme when the most recent film of Rebecca was being filmed. Please click here to read more and for the link to Ned’s piece of music.
Many of you will know about Davey Hal and his beautiful CD, Helford Honeymoon, inspired by his visits to Cornwall and his discovery of Daphne du Maurier’s writing. He performed at the Fowey Festival in May, and we very much hope he will be back again in May 2023, bringing us more of his brilliant music inspired by literature. To be reminded of his work on Helford Honeymoon, please click here.
We always enjoy hearing about where inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s work leads people in all areas of the Arts, including writers, artists and composers. So let us know if you would like to contribute to the Daphne du Maurier website with news of how Daphne has inspired your creativity.
