Daphne du Maurier – Beside Myself
We bring you news of another fabulous highlight taking place during the fortnight of special Daphne du Maurier programmes currently taking place on BBC Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra.
Tomorrow (Wednesday 6th March), on Radio 4 at 2.15pm, you are in for a treat with the biographical play, Beside Myself, written by Moya O’Shea, directed by Tracey Neale and starring Helena Bonham Carter as Daphne and Bill Nighy as ‘Man’.

Daphne, unable to write and suffering from insomnia and depression, is being cared for by nurse Terry. As she takes one of her regular walks along the clifftops near Kilmarth, Terry follows her in the distance. Many of Daphne’s fans know these walks are part of Daphne’s routine and seek her out. So, it is not particularly surprising when a man approaches her. Despite Daphne increasing her pace, ‘Man’ engages her in conversation, and to Daphne’s own amazement, she finds herself telling him much more about herself than she intends to.
Who is ‘Man’, and why does Daphne reveal so much of herself to him? The skill in the writing of this play reveals much about both Daphne’s psyche and about the inspiration for her writing. So settle down and enjoy this Daphne du Maurier treat.
