The Daphne du Maurier Society of North America’s Short Story Study Event 2024 takes place on 19th May
On Sunday 19th May, at 1pm, the Daphne du Maurier Society of North America’s next event takes place, and it’s the Short Story Study Event 2024.
This year, the short story being discussed is The Blue Lenses, which was first published in the short story collection The Breaking Point in 1959 in both the UK and the US.
Dr Michael Shou-Yung Shum will be travelling to Dallas to discuss The Blue Lenses, and the Daphne du Maurier Society of North America are thrilled that he will be joining the group in person. Dr Shum was born and brought up in Houston, Texas and is currently Clinical Associate Professor in the Expository Writing Programme at NYU. He lives in Astoria, Queens. His first novel, Queen of Spades, was published in 2017, and his favourite Daphne du Maurier novel is The Parasites.
The Blue Lenses is perhaps one of the less well-known of Daphne du Maurier’s short stories, but once you have read it, the darkness of the story will stay with you forever. The tale involves a woman called Marda West, who undergoes a serious eye operation. After weeks, blinded by bandages, the doctors remove her dressings, and through her new lenses, she is unnerved to the point of terror by what she sees. Further work on her lenses alters the situation, but is it for the better or, as the story ends, are things even more terrifying than before…
This event takes place on Sunday 19th May 2024, 1.00pm – 3.00pm at 5214 Palomar Lane, Dallas, TX, 75229
Tea will be served.
We will let you know nearer the time if this event is to be available on ZOOM.
