A day-by-day look at the events taking place at Fowey Festival – Saturday 11th May
Rupert Tower
The morning begins with Daphne du Maurier's grandson, Rupert Tower, presenting his talk, Between Two Worlds: Inside Daphne du Maurier's House on the Strand, at 11am in Fowey Town Hall. Rupert is a Jungian analyst, and he will use his expertise to explore Daphne du Maurier's novel, The House on the Strand, in the context of her inner life preoccupations, including dreaming in time, identity, and loss, together with her continued fascination with the past, ancestry, and power of place.
During the day, Bryony Gordon will be in conversation with BBC Radio Cornwall's Daphne Skinnard about her new book Mad Woman. Then, Jessica Hepburn talks about her book Save Me From the Waves, which is an inspirational story of physical and mental endurance. Jessica is the first woman to have completed the Sea, Street, Summit Challenge, by swimming the English Channel, running the London Marathon and climbing Mount Everest.
Dr Helen Doe
Later, at 6pm in Fowey Town Hall, Dr Helen Doe brings us One Crew: 200 Years of Saving Lives at Sea, in which she will talk about her new book, written to celebrate 200 years of the RNLI.
This evening at 8pm in Fowey Town Hall it's Movie Night.
The choice of film this year is Daphne du Maurier's iconic Don't Look Now. This fantastic (and scary!) film stars Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland and was directed by Nicholas Roeg. It was first shown over fifty years ago and has grown in popularity ever since, gaining cult status and remaining as popular today as it was back in the 70s. If you haven't seen it yet, don't miss it this evening, and if you have, we know you will want to see it again.
This year, we are delighted to say that the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature has a physical programme again, something that has been missing for the last couple of years and is now back by popular request. You will be able to pick up a copy of the programme at The Royal Fowey Yacht Club, Fowey Parish Church, Fowey Town Hall, and some of the shops in the town. You can also see the brochure and download it at the Fowey Festival website home page (scroll down the page to - Download the 2024 programme) https://www.foweyfestival.com
