A day-by-day look at the events taking place at Fowey Festival – Saturday 18th May

Today is the last day of the Fowey Festival, and I think we can all agree it has been a week full of great events and things to see and do.

To round off the week, there is one last day of events for you to enjoy, starting with the Strands of Time Guided Walk, which takes you to Par and Tywardreath, which are the locations of Daphe du Maurier's last two novels, The House on the Strand and Rule Britannia.

The day continues with four talks in Fowey Town Hall, beginning at 11am with Lisa Woolett.  She will take us on a walking journey around the edges of Britain and Ireland, as described in her new book Lost to the Sea.

Orlando Murrin

At 2pm, Orlando Murrin, past Masterchef semifinalist and renowned food writer, has turned to crime writing with the publication of his debut novel, Knife Skills For Beginners.  He talks to Veronica Henry about how he progressed from writing recipes to whodunits and how to cook the perfect red herring.

Later, at 4pm, Professor Vernon Bogdanor will present his talk, The Strange Survival of Liberal Britain: Politics and Power Before the First World War, which supports his recent book of the same title.

Then, at 6pm, acclaimed royal biographer Robert Hardman discusses King Charles, a sovereign who is resolute about making his mark.

Robert gained unrivalled access to the Royal Family, their close friends, staff past and present and previously unseen papers in the Royal archive.  Armed with all this information, he was able to write his new book, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story.  He will discuss his research and his book with us.

The festival draws to a close with a fantastic final event, in Fowey Parish Church at 8pm.  Iain Dale and Jacqui Smith bring a live edition of their podcast, For the Many to Fowey, with their guest, West Country Conservative MP and Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer.  Come and join this event at Fowey Parish Church for what is sure to be a hilarious evening of politics as you have never heard it before!

This year, we are delighted to say that the Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature has a physical programme again, something that has been missing for the last couple of years and is now back by popular request.  You will be able to pick up a copy of the programme at The Royal Fowey Yacht Club, Fowey Parish Church, Fowey Town Hall, and some of the shops in the town.  You can also see the brochure and download it at the Fowey Festival website home page (scroll down the page to - Download the 2024 programme) https://www.foweyfestival.com

Please look at your programme for more details.
