Villainesses, Femmes Fatales, Matriarchs and Muses: Du Maurier’s Heroines by Dr. Serena Trowbridge

Dr Serena Trowbridge on stage in Fowey Fown Hall, presenting her talk Villainesses, Femmes Fatales, Matriarchs and Muses: Du Maurier’s Heroines on Thursday 16th May 2024

We were delighted that Dr Serena Trowbridge returned to the Fowey Festival this year to lead two reading groups on Frenchman’s Creek and The King’s General and to present two talks; the first was Stories of the Stones, which explored the mysteries surrounding the standing stones found principally in Cornwall, Wales and Scotland and their significance in mythmaking and storytelling.  Serena’s second talk was Villainesses, Femmes Fatales, Matriarchs and Muses: Du Maurier’s Heroines.

Serena has generously agreed that we reproduce that talk here on the Daphne du Maurier website so that anyone who was not fortunate enough to attend the event can enjoy what she said.

In the write-up for the Fowey Festival programme, Serena said that she would discuss as many of du Maurier’s heroines as could be reasonably covered in the hour of her talk.  She did a magnificent job and discussed every one of Daphne du Maurier’s novels, providing us with vast amounts of insight and information.  She even had time for questions at the end.

Serena’s paper can be found in the Interesting Facts section of the Daphne du Maurier website.  Please click here to go straight to it: https://www.dumaurier.org/menu_page.php?id=231
