Daphne du Maurier fans living in Melbourne, Australia and the surrounding area are in for an absolute treat because they will be able to see an excellent new production of The Birds performed as a one-woman show.

The Birds will be haunting audiences at the Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne, from 16th May – 7th June.  Adapted from the original novella by Daphne du Maurier, the play is written by Louise Fox, directed by Matthew Lutton, and stars Paula Arundell.

Paula is one of Australia’s most magnetic stage actors, probably best known for her role as Hermione in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  For The Birds, she will take centre stage as the show’s solo performer.  In this chilling role, she promises to bring an emotionally complex, edge-of-your-seat performance that will leave audiences breathless.

Here is what Matthew Lutton has to say about the play:

The Birds is a thriller about a family who are living through an extraordinary crisis – the day the birds, as an entire species, turn on humankind.  Paula is one of the country’s most astonishing actors, and this will be the performance of a lifetime.  And you’ll be in the theatre, wearing the headphones, experiencing every whisper and every swoop intimately with her.

And here is the blurb from the theatre:

Overnight, the weather has turned in a small town.  A war has been declared and there’s no one who can stop it.  One family sounds the warning, but what can you do when denial is as easy as keeping your head down?
Award-winning actor Paula Arundell sends your pulse skyrocketing in this adrenaline-shot adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic gothic horror that Hitchcock immortalised in film.
Lights off, headphones on, it is time to be immersed in a theatrical feat of audio engineering.  Enter a nightmarish soundscape of flying feathers, murderous swoops and thrilling carnage directed by Matthew Lutton (responsible for making you scream during Picnic at Hanging Rock).
As you dodge and duck out of reach, just remember: the big wigs in the city won’t save you.
