The Birds by Daphne du Maurier Celebrates its 60th Anniversary in Book and on Film

60th Anniversary article about The Birds

Daphne du Maurier’s story, The Birds, was published in her short story collection The Apple Tree: A Short Novel and Several Long Stories in 1952.  It was first published in paperback by Penguin in 1963, with the new title of The Birds and Other Stories, because by then, The Birds had become the dominant story in that collection.  In the same year, Alfred Hitchcock’s film of The Birds, based on Daphne du Maurier’s short story, was released, making 2023 its 60th Anniversary.

Several articles are appearing in the media to celebrate this special anniversary, focusing on the short story and the film.  We particularly enjoyed the excellent article Revisiting A Classic: Ways to Supplement Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds on its 60th Anniversary, written by Tara Bennett this week and published on the SYFY WIRE website.

Tara knows that people are fascinated by Hitchcock’s 1963 classic The Birds and appreciates that it remains one of his most loved and important films even after sixty years.  In her article, she introduces readers to some ways to appreciate the film even more.   Most interestingly, she includes a link to interviews with director Alfred Hitchcock, the screenwriter Evan Hunter, and the stars of the film Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor, who played Melanie Daniels and Mitch Brenner.
