Ghosts from the Library: Lost Tales of Terror and the Supernatural

A brand new anthology of previously unpublished and uncollected supernatural mysteries by some of the masters of the Golden Age is due to be published on 29th September 2022.  The book includes a previously uncollected short story by Daphne du Maurier.  Ghosts from the Library: Lost Tales of Terror and the Supernatural includes one of Daphne’s earliest attempts at short story writing, Terror.

Terror was published in the Bystander Magazine on 26th December 1928 and was the very first piece of Daphne’s work to be published.  However, the story was never included in any of her collections of short stories or published anywhere else again.  So, this will be an exciting moment in Daphne du Maurier’s publishing history.

About the Author:

Editor Tony Medawar is a detective fiction expert and researcher with a skill for tracking down rare stories.  In addition to the Bodies from the Library series, of which this new book is part, he has edited collections including While the Light Lasts (Agatha Christie), The Avenging Chance (Anthony Berkeley), The Spotted Cat (Christianna Brand), A Spot of Folly (Ruth Rendell) The 9.50 Up Express (Freeman Wills Crofts), and the book Murder, She Said: The Quotable Miss Marple.

‘Medawar brings to public awareness some of the forgotten, neglected or simply unknown stories that the great and the good of the form produced.  These collections have become a source of great excitement and are a must-read for even the most ardent student of the Golden Age.’―The Invisible Event.

It is said that books are written to bring sunshine into our dull, grey lives – to show us places we want to escape to, lives we want to live, and people we want to love.  But some stories can only be found in the deepest, darkest corners of the library.  Stories about the unexplained, of lost souls, of things that go bump before the silence.  Before the screaming.

And some stories just disappear.  Stories printed in old newspapers, broadcast live on the wireless, sometimes not even published at all – these are the stories you cannot find on even the dustiest of library shelves.

Ghosts from the Library resurrects forgotten tales of the supernatural by some of the most acclaimed mystery authors of all time.  From Arthur Conan Doyle and John Dickson Carr to Agatha Christie and Daphne du Maurier, this spine-chilling anthology brings together thirteen uncollected tales of terror, plus some additional surprises.

The fireplace was a yawning cave; the table a gigantic toad...

Close the windows.  Draw the curtains.  Just don’t let the lights go out…
