A Day by Day look at the events taking place at Fowey Festival – Saturday 7th May

Friday night (6th May) saw the Fowey Festival open with a great evening concert in the company of Seth Lakeman.

On Saturday 7th May there are lots of events to tempt you, including a talk about Laurie Lee by David Parker, an event called Through the Eyes of a Scriptwriter, given by William Ivory, The Suffragette Cookbook with Kate Williams and a great evening with Roger McGough called Safety in Numbers.  However, Saturday’s event that is likely to be of enormous interest to all followers of Daphne du Maurier is the event at 11am in the Town Hall when Justine Picardie presents her talk, Miss Dior: A Story of Courage and Couture.

As many of you will already know, Justine wrote her beautiful novel, Daphne, in 2008.  You can read our article about Daphne and how it came to be written, by clicking here.  Justine also wrote the introduction to two of the Virago series of Daphne du Maurier books.  She confesses that Daphne du Maurier is her guilty secret, and through researching for her novel, she became a true du Maurier expert.

Justine Picardie

Justine is a former editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar and has written widely on many subjects, including much on fashion.  She has attended the festival on several occasions, and is it a thrill to have her return.  This time she discusses her dazzling new book, Miss Dior: A Story of Courage and Couture.  Informed by unparalleled access to the Dior family homes and archives, Miss Dior paints a portrait of the enigmatic woman behind the designer Christian Dior: his beloved younger sister Catherine, who inspired his most famous perfume and shaped his vision of femininity.  It is a story of freedom and fascism, beauty and betrayal, roses and repression and how the polished surface of fashion conceals hidden depths.  The result is an exquisite, unforgettable book.

Do join Justine at her event on Saturday morning.  You will be glad you did.
