Director Nicolas Roeg ('Don't Look Now') dies, age 90
We were sorry to hear about the death of the film director Nicolas Roeg, age 90. Roeg directed the 1973 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's short story 'Don't Look Now', starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. A deeply disturbing and haunting film, Roeg's masterful adaptation remains one of the best Du Maurier films to date. We very much enjoyed reading this essay on Du Maurier's Rebecca, 'Manderley, again', written by Lia Mills in the Dublin Review of Books. Mills writes: 'One reason for Rebecca’s success is that it tells a good story, in the classic, narrative-driven sense – the sort of story at which it has become quite fashionable to sneer. Another is that the reader is never entirely sure exactly what is going on beneath the thrilling surface.' Death of Livia Gollancz, Du Maurier's publisher
We were saddened to hear of the death of Livia Gollancz on Thursday March 29th 2018. Livia Gollancz was the daughter of Victor Gollancz and succeeded her father in running the publishing house, Victor Gollancz Ltd, after his death in 1967. On March 19th at 2pm in Berrills Yard in Fowey, the new sculpture nicknamed 'the rook with a book' was unveiled by Daphne du Maurier's son Kits Browning. The sculpture of a bird holding a book was inspired by Daphne du Maurier's 1952 short story 'The Birds' and is the first public monument to her work. We were delighted to see 'Rebecca' at the top of the list of women's writing on Waterstone's latest blog, celebrating '100 books by women, to mark 100 years of the first women’s right to vote in Britain'. Other writers included on the list are Jeanette Winterson, George Eliot, and Jane Austen. We are delighted to hear that Penguin have republished Daphne du Maurier's short story 'The Breakthrough' in their new Penguin Modern range. New public artwork to be unveiled in Fowey based on du Maurier's The Birds
We are absolutely delighted to announce the unveiling of a new public artwork in Fowey, inspired by du Maurier's The Birds. The sculpture, pictured here, is called 'The Bird' and it will be unveiled by Daphne du Maurier's son, Kits Browning, on March 19th as part of the launch of this year's Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature (which will run May 11th-19th 2018 and will feature a range of events focusing on du Maurier's life and works).... 'Phantom Thread': New Daniel Day-Lewis film influenced by du Maurier's 'Rebecca'
We are looking forward to seeing the new Daniel Day-Lewis film, 'Phantom Thread' (in cinemas now). Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Day-Lewis plays a fashion designer, living with his sister (played by Lesley Manville), who falls in love with a waitress (played by Vicky Krieps). Reviews of the film suggest that it is influenced by du Maurier's 'Rebecca' and by Hitchcock's 1940 adaptation. The Guardian review suggests that Manville's character is a 'combination of Mrs Danvers and Rebecca herself' and that Day-Lewis and Krieps channel Maxim and Mrs de Winter.
